"This is the season our mailboxes are filled with stacks of mail-order catalogs, and the television is full of advertisements of all kinds of shiny new things wrapped up with red bows. Through their colorful pictures and creative words, advertisers seek to convince us that we don't have enough stuff--that we need more, newer, better... They want to feed our natural desires for more than we really need... By putting our focus on giving to others and meeting their very real needs, we can battle the greed in our hearts. Christmas is a season not of getting, but of giving, because at Christmas we are celebrating that God is the most generous and outrageous Giver in the universe. After all, He gave us His Son...To pour ourselves into becoming outrageous givers is to pursue becoming more like God."(Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room) Describe the best gift you've ever been given. What was it? Who gave it to you? Why was (is) it so special to you? Christmas is such a fun time seeing what new toys/gadgets have come out! It's exciting to watch the ever-growing collection of wrapped presents under the tree and to imagine what each package contains as we can barely wait until Christmas to open them. While Christmas brings the opportunity to give and receive presents, it also presents us with chances to serve others. God has set an incredible example of giving for us: at just the right time, when we needed Him most, He sent His only Son to us. Talk as a family about ways you can give to others this Christmas and make a plan for how you can follow through--maybe your family decides to serve Christmas dinner at Faith City Mission, maybe your family wants to choose a child from the Angel Tree at FBC and help another family have gifts to open on Christmas. Pray together, thanking God for giving us the ultimate Christmas present that we can never top, and ask Him to help keep your focus on serving others this Christmas season.
